Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations, renowned for its spectacular, wild and untouched scenery.
Often described as a must-see experience in New Zealand, Milford Sound offers a chance to experience some of the country’s most dramatic landscapes, from towering mountains and sheer cliffs to cascading waterfalls and lush rainforest.
From Lake Tekapo, you can experience Milford Sound in around an hour by air, saving you the seven-hour drive. From Franz Josef, flying saves you around nine and a half hours of road travel.
Milford Sound itself is a 15-kilometre-long fiord extending inland from the Tasman Sea. Steep mountains rise dramatically from the water, with cliff faces reaching up to 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) and waterfalls cascading down into the fiord. The surrounding rainforest clings to the mountainsides, creating a truly spectacular setting.
Keep an eye out for the local wildlife too. Fur seals, penguins and dolphins can often be seen in the waters, while whales are occasionally spotted in the area.

Milford Sound – Direct Route
We take a direct route from Lake Tekapo to Milford Sound, with spectacular views along the way. As we cross the Mackenzie Basin, you’ll see the surrounding basin lakes and the Ben Ohau Range, followed by Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. Continuing west, we pass Mt Aspiring and the vast landscapes of Aspiring National Park, before crossing the Olivine Ice Plateau and following the Hollyford Valley into Milford Sound.
We enter Milford Sound via its entrance from the Tasman Sea, giving you stunning views of the towering cliffs, waterfalls and dramatic landscape.

Milford Sound – via Mount Cook & the Glaciers
For a longer scenic experience, our Mountains & Glaciers route takes you through some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Southern Alps.
Departing Lake Tekapo, we head towards Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, with views of some of New Zealand’s largest glaciers, including the Tasman, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Along the way, you’ll also see Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, New Zealand’s two highest peaks.
From the Southern Alps, we continue south over the West Coast’s rugged rainforest and remote valley systems before approaching Milford Sound. We enter through the mouth of the Sound, providing spectacular views of its sheer mountain cliffs and waterfalls.
The return journey follows the direct route described above, giving you a different perspective on the landscape.

Our Milford Sound flights usually include a 30-60 minute stopover, giving you time to take in the scenery, explore the area and enjoy a short break at the local café.
If you’re on a tighter schedule, we can also overfly Milford Sound without landing, allowing you to experience the spectacular scenery from above.
One of the most popular ways to experience Milford Sound is by boat. We can arrange a Milford Sound boat cruise for you, which typically spends around 2 hours on the water. The cruise takes you through the full length of the Sound towards the Tasman Sea, with close-up views of the towering cliffs, rainforest and waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides.
