Save a 7 hour drive with a direct flight to Milford Sound

Milford Sound is New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination. It enjoys some of the most spectacular, wild, untamed and unspoilt scenery in New Zealand.

Milford Sound has been voted the most got-to-do thing by tourists in New Zealand. According to an international survey, Milford Sound rated the world’s top travel destination trumping all other destinations in all other countries listed.

You too, can experience the beauty of Milford Sound in around an hour of flying, saving you a 7 hour drive from Lake Tekapo, or a 9 ½ hour drive from Franz Josef. The sound itself is a 15 kilometre inlet from the sea with a fresh water layer on top. On either side, the steep mountain sides rise dramatically with steep cliff faces up to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) or more. Waterfalls come raining down from out of the heavens, and lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs. Seals, penguins and dolphins frequent the waters and whales occasionally are seen.

There are two ways we can fly you to Milford, one is a direct route and the other is via Mt Cook and the Glaciers.

Direct Route

$770 per adult, minimum 4 adult fares

We head in a direct route to Milford Sound from Lake Tekapo and take in views of our basin lakes, the Ben Ohau range, Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka, Mt Aspiring and the Aspiring National Park, the Olivine Ice Plateau and the Hollyford Valley as we work our way into Milford via the Entrance to the Sound. The flight is about 1 hour each way.

Via Mt Cook and Glaciers

$870 per adult, minimum 4 adult fares

On the route down to Milford Sound, we initially depart and head into the Mt Cook National Park for views of our largest glaciers including the Tasman, Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. We also see our tallest mountains including Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, before heading south via the West Coast rainforest and valley systems towards Milford Sound. We enter by the mouth of the sound for stunning views of the mountain cliffs and waterfalls. The route back is via the direct route as above. The flight time via the mountains and glaciers is about 1 hour and 20 minutes to Milford, and another hour flight return.

Your Time at Milford Sound:

Our flights to Milford usually stop over for about 30 to 60 minutes, plenty of time to explore the wonder and beauty of the area, and a rest stop at the local café. For those with a more limited timeframe, we can overfly Milford Sound without landing and explore the area from above.

One of the more popular activities to take in Milford Sound are the boat tours. We can arrange a boat tour for you which usually take about 1 hour and 30 minutes on the water, exploring the entire sound right out to the coast, including the waterfalls falling from the sky.
